A national campaign was organized to launch the SmartCane in multiple cities of South Africa including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Worcester, Durban and Peitmaritzburg in the first week of March 2017, in collaboration with Disability Management Services (DMS), the International partner organization of Saksham in South Africa.

Team members from SmartCaneTM team and DMS conducted series of Awareness and training workshops at the following organizations: College of Orientation and Mobility (SA guide dog Association), Blind SA, Cape Town Society for the Blind, Pioneer School, KZN society for Deaf and Blind, University of Kwazulu Natal and International Arabic School for the Blind. Very large number of persons with blindness as well as O&M experts and community workers pro-actively participated in the workshops. Participants were keen and enthusiastic to procure the devices and improve their safety and independence during day-to-day mobility.

Team members also met the key stakeholders from Government, organizations and user groups to figure out pathways for providing SmartCaneTM devices in highly affordable manner along with the quality training.

SmartCaneTM is now available in South Africa through Disability Management Services. DMS in turn working with multiple organizations to make devices available through them along with quality training for the convenience and benefits of the persons with blindness.
